Cannabidiol, better known by its short form of CBD, is a cannabinoid. More simply put, it is a molecule naturally produced by hemp (cannabis) plants. Its chemical proximity to certain molecules produced by the human body allows it to have effects on our endocannabinoid system, which is distributed throughout our body and involved at many levels. And so it was that the effects of CBD are numerous and varied. It is therefore specially studied for its neuroprotective effects and his ability to do so stimulate the production of new cells. It is therefore logically considered within the framework ofSupport for neurological diseases.
We focus here on the role of CBD against psychosiswhat we know and what remains to be discovered before we may be able to develop new treatments that are more effective and less distressing for patients and those around them.
What happens in the brain of a patient with psychosis?
First, let’s clarify that an episode of psychosis does not always indicate mental illness. It is estimated that around 3% of the population will be confronted with a psychotic episode at some point. The psychosis appears to have been caused by a problem with the deep and early connections of our braina bit like a complex electrical system whose various elements are not perfectly connected.
At the time of the psychotic episode, the brain is unable to function properly and can no longer distinguish the fake from the authenticity. The person suffering from it can then be takenhallucinationsfrom deceptions more or less advanced and keep incoherent remarks.
So much for the generalities. Nevertheless, there are numerous psychotic disorders, and each is accompanied by its peculiarities.
Main types of psychotic disorders
- schizophrenia
- Schizoaffective Disorder (Symptoms of Schizophrenia and Mood Disorders)
- Paranoid delusions
- hallucinatory psychosis
- psychotic depression
- Brief psychotic episodes (similar to schizophrenia but in episodes of short duration)
- Psychosis caused by drugs, alcohol or medication
Common symptoms of psychosis
- hallucinations
- delusions
- disorganization of thought
- Communication difficulties (oral and physical communication)
- The mood changes
- suicidal thoughts
- sleep disorders
Existing treatments for psychosis and limits
Plus one psychosis treatment implemented early, the more likely it is to be effective. However, it often stays that way diagnosed relatively late, in adolescence or even in adulthood. However, certain evocative signs may be detectable as early as childhood, at a time when brain development is not yet complete. However, early diagnosis is still too rare, and most patients are not treated until the brain has already firmly established habitual functioning.
Most often, the treatment of psychosis is associated drugs, antipsychotics etc psychiatric follow-up, especially to deal with the patient’s depression, which is present in half of the cases. Unfortunately, there are many mental illnesses that cannot be definitively cured and whose treatment consists in treating the main symptoms. Another big problem is that antipsychotics come with many adverse effects, sometimes difficult. Therefore, 15 to 20% of patients treated with antipsychotics for several years will develop it tardive dyskinesia. It translates into involuntary movements in the mouth, arms and/or legs.
CBD to relieve the symptoms of psychosis?
Let’s not get our hopes up: there is no solid scientific evidence that CBD can treat psychotic disorders. However, initial studies show some opportunities:
- CBD has anti-inflammatory propertiesbut inflammation plays an important role in psychotic disorders.
- Stress influences psychotic relapses and even the initiation of the first psychotic episodes. Again, CBD is known for its relaxing and antidepressant properties.
- The corresponding study from 2021 showed the ability of CBD to do this positively modulate certain areas of the brain associated with psychosis (and that of THC to aggravate the same disorders).
- Another study showed a tendency to do so decrease in symptoms in schizophrenics treated with a dose of 1000 milligrams of CBD per day.
However, the existing studies are still too few and too small (small sample of people) to draw definitive conclusions. Of larger studies are still necessary to benefit from it sufficient evidence for the effectiveness of CBD against psychosis.
CBD products suitable for psychotic disorders
If you (or someone you know) suffer from psychosis and want to consume CBD, talk to your doctor first ! He will advise you with full knowledge of your medical condition, help you to find the right dosage and, if possible, avoid drug interactions, especially with antidepressants.
Once the decision has been made, all that remains is to find the right product. L’CBD oil is then recommended Easy to use, easy to dose and with no major side effects known. In the capsule, just swallow it with some water. In the form of dosing bottleplace the desired amount under the tongue with the dropper, wait 30 to 40 seconds to facilitate passage into the bloodstream and to swallow. Relaxing effects should appear afterwards about twenty minutes.
Warning: THC is an aggravating factor that may trigger psychotic disorders. In fact, it is antagonistic (it has opposite effects) to CBD in many ways. It is therefore out of the question to use marijuana to improve a symptom associated with psychosis. Always prefer high-quality CBD extracts, either in isolated form (crystals, patches) or in the form of broad-spectrum products (especially our CBD oils) that guarantee the use of a healthy CBD product without a trace of THC.
